INDEPENDENT. CONTEMPORARY. ART
OFF-Biennale Budapest 2015
April 24 − May 31, 2015
“OFF-Biennale is an unprecedented initiative in the Hungarian cultural life. The organisation of this event series, involving several hundred participants, was undertaken without any institutional or financial backing by a small group of professionals who brought together the actors of OFF with the aim of laying the foundations for an independent, diverse visual arts scene.
OFF was realised according to a model previously untested in Hungary: it was implemented without state funding, independently of the state cultural infrastructure, relying on international and private support, on collaborations among various actors of the contemporary art field, through self-organization and an enormous amount of voluntary work. Artists and artist collectives, curators, non-profit venues, commercial galleries, civil organizations, private supporters, collectors, and culturally engaged volunteers have formed a network to show the Hungarian public that contemporary art is not the privilege of a few, but a collection of exciting and thought-provoking artistic practices that speak to all of our lives.
Over five weeks, nearly 200 events took place, involving close to 300 Hungarian and 60 international artists, across 120 venues in Budapest. OFF, however, is not active only in Budapest: OFF satellite programmes also run in 10 regional cities and at 5 international locations. The first OFF-Biennale was characterised by the diversity of its sites and artistic projects. In addition to galleries, public spaces—from Szabadság Square to Népsziget—hosted programmes, while events were also realised in private apartments, retail spaces, construction sites, a hair salon, the Kelenföld Power Plant, and even the garage of the former Post Palace.”
