Urban space concrete pump? Reinterpreted Demszky-column? Asphalt Twister? Braille graffiti made of concrete? Anti-paving-stone mafia? Think hard!
The students of the BETON course -organized by the S’39 Hybrid Design Manufacture and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics since 2011- this year are willing to react to a given urban area’s or a social group’s real pretensions with their material: the concrete.
Similarly to the 2013 BETON (concrete) Workshop, the participants create urban space interventions in Budapest downtown knowing no obstacles or fear: repairing pavement, sidewalk and plaster failures with clever and cute concrete implants, making street art experienceable for the blind and partially sighted, healing urban benches and columns that were subjects of consecutive abuse.
The goal of Team BETON is to bring the attention of everyday people on the subtilities of urban areas and at the same time rewrite the common associations linked to concrete. It strives to enlighten the citizens, that they indeed can take part in the forming of their environment and can do something for the development and beauty of it themselves. Who can forbid voluntary urban healing after all?
This year the BETON team will take part int he OFF Biennale with a walking tour and a public PechaKucha afternoon where this year’s completed works and the previous interventions will be presented.
