From Prague to Košice, Gdansk to Bucharest, Belgrade to Tallinn, we have set out to explore the up-and-coming artists of the former Eastern Bloc musical underground, recording interviews and sounds of the region. Easterndaze aims to explore the current political and social status quo in some of the countries in CEE region through the eyes of the ones most vulnerable to changes in society – young artists who are still under-the-radar. The project aims not only to raise the awareness about up-and-coming – mainly experimental and electronic sonic – artists in the West, but – perhaps even more importantly – to increase the strikingly low informedness and foster cooperation between the Eastern artistic scenes themselves.

We want to find out how musicians, often born after the fall of Communism, come to terms with the legacy of their past amid turbulent present, facing an uncertain future. Since the beginning of the project in 2010, we have released several compilations, broadcast shows on various radios, organised concerts and curated events and music-related initiatives and most importantly, forged invaluable friendships and contacts with tireless music activists across the region. The exhibition at Higgs aims to shed a light on the talent, accentuating the DIY aesthetics and subversive tactics of these auteurs and labels through music videos, talks and events, drawing from the five years of the existence of this project.
