Planking Project

Planking Project

April 24 – May 31, 2015

A female figure lies face down on the backrest of a sofa, her arms pressed tightly against her body, her body rigid.

The figure, mostly turned face downward with her hands held stiffly against her body, provokes the audience through her stillness and isolation. Planking is a playful expression of civil resistance, practiced by millions worldwide. It is at once a cry for help and a rejection, a way to draw attention and an act of passivity.

The person planking unsettles the viewer with their extremely exhibitionist behavior. To heighten their vulnerability, they choose the most unusual locations as the setting for their action.

Planking is a form of concentrated inactivity, but also a means of connecting to a virtual community. The act is documented either by the planker themselves or by an acquaintance, and then shared with the world via the internet, thereby becoming part of a universal folklore.
