National Textbook (Exhibition + Workshop)
National Textbook (Exhibition + Workshop)
May 18–23, 2015
Organisers: Zsolt Keserue, Júlia Csernovszky, Réka Kenéz, Renáta Kovács
The National Textbook Committee is once again organizing a one-week workshop–exhibition. Together with secondary school students and other interested participants, we will build a collection of stereotypes about Hungary and Hungarians, arranged in the form of bulletin boards and monument models. The content will be based on stereotypes that the participants collect in advance through their own networks of acquaintances abroad. Prior to the workshop–exhibition, students will also familiarize themselves—under the guidance of a subject teacher—with foreign textbooks available in partner schools and with the narratives about Hungarians found in them.
One of the outcomes of the National Textbook Project, which has been developing since 2009, will be a collage book. This book will consist exclusively of textual and visual materials about Hungarians and their history cut out from foreign secondary school textbooks (from countries mentioned in the most widely used history textbook in Hungary), arranged chronologically and pasted into the volume.
As the closing stage of this multi-year project, a website will also be created. It will contain the edited Hungarian translation of the collage book’s text, along with the original source texts and images from the textbooks and documentation from the workshops, all made publicly accessible.
Venue: Medence Concept Store (1093 Budapest, Pipa utca 4.)
