Performance by Júlia Gerőcs

The performance entitled Kakology by Switzerland – based artist Júlia Gerőcs is positioned on border zone of visual arts and theatre. The leitmotif of the production is a fictive dialogue with the Czech writer Milan Kundera about the kitsch and its existential importance, based on a quote from the regime-critical novel by the author The Unbearable Lightness of Being: “… kitsch is the absolute denial of shit, in both the literal and the figurative senses of the word; kitsch excludes everything from its purview which is essentially unacceptable in human existence.”

The dialogical scenes with Kundera, who is displayed as a puppet alternate with short narrative sequencesbased on true events personally experienced by the artist. The characters of the evoked stories are inshitsituations “in both the literal and the figurative senses of theword”, they try to escape from the difficulties by the assistance of kitsch. That raises the question whether the kitsch is a phenomenon witch should be overcome or a necessity.
