Particip No. 181, Field of Vision

May 16–31, 2015

Tomáš Vaněk works are based on mapping of the space, the broadened notion of space. In his work Vaněk models situations, manipulates them, puts new strain in relations, to make marginal relations more visible, to make the spectators feel insecure, to make them participate. „Particip“ became his base concept for action and intervention directly responding to a particular place or space. Tomáš Vaněk presents two works at the OFF-Biennale Budapest, both are based on mapping of the space, if we broaden the notion of space to different directions. Both intervention-like piece belongs to Vaněk’s series entitled Particip and each approaches spatial and social relations differently. Caption turns to the marginal systems and applications made of objects and devices, which are surrounded, and maybe seen, by many people, but, or precisely because of that, are not in the focus of attention. These are peripheral zones to the everyday perception, however, Vaněk’s practice shows us that these objects – often taken for granted -, and their associative fields are not unconcerning at all. His intervention entitled Field of Vision also focuses on the relation of centre and periphery, during which Vaněk draws literally the field of vision of members of a given community to a white wall. The drawings are made with chalks of different colour rendering them separable to some extent, and from their vegetative and organic chaos one can distinguish a system of a kind and its diverse interpretational options.Exhibiting artist: Tomáš Vaněk
