Sound as Space
Sound as Space
May 2–17, 2015
Can’t you see? A walk for the ear. Downtown shops as works of art? Sound as fine art? Noise disturbance on Király utca, musical boxes at a café, prostitution and a paternoster at Rákóczi tér? Familiar themes in a form never heard before. Our perception of sound and space is intertwined within us; it is part of our everyday experience. Approaching this phenomenon from a visual-arts perspective is an especially exciting practice, because in these works the physical presence of the viewer—and its characteristics (their speed of movement, the duration of their stay, their volume)—has a direct effect on the artwork. The work therefore changes from moment to moment, providing an exclusive and unique experience for each participant. The aim of this exhibition is to present this artistic approach in as rich a way as possible. For this reason, we invited five artists working both in Hungary and internationally, whose outstanding achievements represent sound art at a high level and who can help strengthen the spread of this approach in Hungary. With backgrounds in both music and visual art, the five invited artists each developed a work for a particular exciting and unique location that is part of the city’s everyday life. Sound art does not demand theoretical preparation; rather, it creates a sonic environment that can affect anyone who arrives in the space and is attentively present there. Our organized walks, led with the help of Hosszúlépés, guide interested visitors through the experience.
