Toi Toi projektraum
Toi Toi projektraum
April 24 – May 31, 2015
Exhibiting artists: Brücke Zwei (István Felsmann, Judit Fischer, András Zalavári)
The idea of the Toi Toi projektraum was came after a talk about the projektraums in Berlin and Budapest. In Budapest theirspread is just starting and expected to grow in the near future. These are such type of common spaces where creative activities cantake place, and serve as a venue for other cultural events as openings, lectures, performances or happenings. We would like to exhibit one or more Toi Tois as projektraums. We will put a projektraum sticker instead of the I love Toi Toi one. The toilet paper will be an endless catalogue and after the interactive printing process, it can be takenaway or thrown into the devastating blue liquid. As we speak about Toi toi toilets, they are movable and can be set upin different points of the city. They can beused as their function. If the occasion arises they can be the official toilets of the Off Biennale. After Zizek’s speech about the toilets we can feel free to make connections between the form of the toilet and the structure of the society. The dream of the Toi Toi designers was a democratic, community builder, gender and raceequal toilet, that can be used by all social classes. This dream more or less came true with an ambivalent result. It ishypermodern and folk at the same time. One can feel itself at the NASA as well as in a prehistoric latrine. It is like asquat-toilet spaceship. The toilets were great place to start at the past also. The basic thought of reformation was conceived in a privy in Wittenberg: the salvation lies in the private belief. The visitor may not glorifie but a Toi Toi can be a salvation in somecases. A hidden meaning of Toi Toi echoing the objective of the Off Biennale. Its a protesting form when a group of people, sometimes even hundreds or thousands, do a combination of singing, dancing and chanting to express unhappiness about a particular subject. In the southern part of Africa, when people are unhappy about something, usually something regarding the government, a group of people feeling strongly about the cause will organize a toi toi and take out to the streets. These events usually get a lot of media attention. This is how a toi toi can be a perfect symbol and indispensable element of an grassroot initiation.
