springerin – 20 years anniversary presentation – Escape Routes

April 24 – May 12, 2015

Brody ArtYard in celebration of springerin magazine 20 years’ anniversary, proudly presents the exhibition Escape Routes. The exhibition is an attempt to interrogate the feasibility of alternative scenarios to the global capitalist system, their theoretical foundations and the artistic elaborations of various “exit” endeavors and formats. Its main focus is on the question of what kind of practices are conceivable outside the current system but also to extent to which the system can be reshaped from within. Furthermore, early springerin designs and sketches will be presented through a Mobile Library specially designed by the artist Johannes Porsch. The piece is conceived as an abstract element oscillating between pure functionality and a potential sculptural representation. The modernist-style construction, whose utopian, fragmentary “something-is-missing mode” is temporarily “completed” – and thus realized – by the addition of an everyday piece of discount furniture. Being a kind of “performative object” that is observed and utilized, it equally addresses the spatiotemporal conditions in which it is presented. springerin – Hefte für Gegenwartskunst is a quarterly magazine dedicated to the theory and critique of contemporary art and culture. Based in Vienna, Austria it has been running since 1995 when its first issue came out. On the occasion of springerin’s 20th anniversary, a series of presentations in various locations will provide glimpses of the history of the magazine and try to develop prospects for the future. The presentation includes all issues published, with a selection of artworks / artists featured in the magazine.
