Dunaújváros – Bus Trip to the Realized Utopia

Dunaújváros – Bus Trip to the Realized Utopia

October 7, 2017

Organizer: Artmagazin

Two years ago, during the first OFF-Biennale, the Artmagazin left for Miskolc; this year, the destination is Dunaújváros. Although the Dunai Vasmű Power Plant and the city itself were but parts of a controlled utopia, they did offer great opportunities and some freedom to the Modernist architecture of the time. What imagined model defined life there at the time? How significant was the role of voluntary activities, and what standard did that provide for children’s lifestyles? How is present life affected by this late utopia?

Program:

City walk: Dunai Ironworks main gate – Industrial Open-Air Museum – The first residential district (buffalo and bone houses, old water tower, theater, old commercial building, mosaics) – Socialist Realist city center (Dózsa Cinema, former Arany Csillag Hotel, Clinic, “the longest street in the world,” etc.)

Walk along the Danube in the Sculpture Park of the Dunaújváros International Steel Sculpture Creative Colony

Guided tour of János Brückner’s Extreme Presence exhibition at ICA-D, led by the exhibition’s curator, Péter Bencze

Tour guides: Annamária Nagy (art historian), Márta Branczik (architecture historian)
