Simon Sheikh: Art, Populism and the People

In his lecture for Translocal Institute, theorist Simon Sheikh addresses issues of art and democracy that are of critical relevance to the political context of artistic production today.

Sheikh’s presentation is realised within the framework of Anthropocene Response, a series of guest lectures that provides a platform to consider changing paradigms of social, economic and cultural thought in the light of the awareness of ecological crisis. In addition to presenting their research, speakers are invited to reflect on the implications of anthropocene consciousness for their own professional trajectories. Dr. Simon Sheikh is a curator and theorist. He is Reader in Art and Programme Director of MFA Curating at Goldsmiths, University of London. He is a correspondent for Springerin, Vienna, and a columnist for e-flux Journal, New York. He is currently a researcher for the on-going Former West project, initiated by BAK in Utrecht, and working on a book about art and apocalypse entitled Its After the End of the World.
