People Players - guided tour and Johanna Billing's presentation

Venue: Három Holló Kávéház
1052 Budapest, Piarista köz 1. Entrance from Szabad Sajtó út

The Balloon tells the story around how the legendary exhibition in the form of an adventure playground, The Model for a Qualitative Society, by Danish architect Palle Nielsen displayed at Moderna Museet in Stockholm in 1968, was later resurrected in between houses in a newly constructed area in another part of Sweden in Råby, Västerås. The project was named The Balloon and was built by local residents together with the artist. Away from the museum's setting, some of the project’s original ideas around the freedom of the children in the city became more activated and highlighted.

Fifty years later, the project The Balloon – Play for Real became a contemporary artistic exploration of Råby. In 2015–2017, a number of artists were invited to create new workshops and artworks, based on contemporary Råby, for children and young people in the area, and to breathe new life into the idea of the 60’s notions of the adventure playground as a site of ”active community” in society.

During her presentation Johanna Billing –one of the participating artists of the project– will introduce the Balloon project and the related one-year long course she organised at Konstfack – University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm to challenge and deepen the understanding of what social practices mean and can be today.

The presentation will be in English!
